Today would have been Frida Kahlo’s birthday. As a woman artist, and a Latina, Frida Kahlo is one of my creative idols. Her life story has been told many times, but the reason why she still inspires me is because she was a fighter too, just like me. No matter how much physical and emotional pain she experienced, she continued to live, love and create beauty out of her pain. She really knew how to live it up too! She fully embraced her Mexican heritage, dressing in traditional costume more often than not. She was a revolutionary, and a visionary. She was true to herself, no matter what. She loved to sing, often bawdy songs, and had a true lust for life. And she knew the dichotomy of being mixed race, just like me. For all of these reasons and more, Frida’s life has inspired me just as much as her art, which was also deeply challenging, fearless and visionary. So I’ve compiled a few photographs I’ve taken as a tribute to her divine, unique brand of Mexican femininity. Thanks for the inspiration and the lessons in courage, Frida!
