In Captivity

in Captivity

At the heart of the matter, I am in captivity, as are we all to some extent. This is on canvas, and it’s mixed media. I painted it in layers, and scratched the surface, quite literally, with the tip of my paintbrush, because I wanted to give the feeling of barbed wire to the painting, although it could rightly be confused with cross-hatching too. I used some fabric paints, to give a more vibrant pop of color, and used watercolors too. Fake blood was used to create the heart-shaped “lips,” to signify the way that hearts often bleed. Why leave it ambiguous, you ask? Why not make it one or the other? Because I was once told, “you have heart-shaped lips.” Is the mouth therefore made for love?
