My creative challenge was to try to recreate Arcadia’s “So Red the Rose” album cover, with a new spin on it. Arcadia was a side project of Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran. It’s one of my all-time favorite albums, so here is a collage of several different versions I’ve come up with thus far, using myself as the cover model.
I do not subscribe to the popular notion that the ‘selfie’ implicates in popular culture, though I’d be lying if I said that I was never prone to moments of vanity, like most people. I prefer to use existing photographic technology to creative ends, essentially transforming myself and the world around me; looking at myself, in this case, through a new lens, so to speak. And I’ve also tried to pay homage to the music and imagery that I’ve loved for many years.
I took a series of photographs from various angles, and then retouched them and used a number of different digital effects until I’d found a suitable enough replica for “So Red the Rose.” I used a variety of creative applications, including Photoshop Express, Photo Candy, Aviary and Photo Lab (all iOS-based systems.)
